The information about this marriage except the specific marriage in the Spooner Genealogy has been researched and NONE of it can be found. Who Aaron Gates was cannot be determined, when he died, where he lived, how it is known his widow was the Sally Gates involved, when he married; likewise birth and death date of Sally (i.e., other than this source), whether she married again, what state she came from, where she died; likewise no trace of a Samuel Watrous with wife Letitia (i.e., marriage, or as parents) or any record of Letitia Watrous (i.e., death) or Letitia Minor (i.e., birth or marriage).
It is assumed that the 1850 census listing a Sarah Eaton and a few children (Stephen, Charles, Hannah) was important. This Sarah Eaton died in 1877 in Rhode Island with father listed as --- Watrous. Obviously it is assumed since there of three of Seth Spooner's children living there, that she is his widow and perhaps is the justification for the above identification. If she is their mother.... In keeping with much of the facts in this case, no marriage record to Israel Eaton is found (Both Salem and Marbelhead have marriages of a man named Israel Eaton to a woman named Sarah, but not Sarah Spooner), nor the births of the two Eaton children found in the 1850 census. Obviously Sally was much younger than Seth and a birth about 1788 would at least make it feasible that she was having children with Seth from 1813 until 1825 and possibly beyond with Israel Eaton. But it would mean she was only 24 when she supposedly married for the second time. Other items that seems to add some support for parts of the information presented by the Spooner Genealogy is "Gardner" living with brother Samuel in 1880, and Uncle Seth living with Samuel's son Cornelius in 1880.
