The Marriage between Seth Pope and Hannah Bourne both of Sandwich was solemnized before Mr. Rowland Cotton Minester att Sandwich on the 12th day of January Anno domini 1709/10
- Source:Worden, Dora Pope. Genealogy of Thomas Pope (1608-1683) and His Descendants, p. 19, adds Mary, bapt. 1720, and a second Elisha, b. 28 Jul 1729. No information beyond their birth/baptism is given. Neither seem to be mentioned in the records, birth or baptism. However, both are mentioned in Lydia Brownson and MacLean McLean's article on the maternal Bourne family, NEHGR, Vol. 118, p. 202, also having no information beyond their birth/baptism.
1. The impreciseness of Mary's baptism date in the Bourne genealogy does not give confidence, as it does not sound like it is based on an actual baptism record. But the NEHGR article gives the baptism date as 1 May 1720. Looking at the baptism records in the published Sandwich VRS, Vol. 2, p. 1379, we find that on 1 May 1720, sister Hannah Pope was baptized, along with a Mary Ellis. It seems likely that the baptism record was misinterpreted and young Miss Ellis was erroneously placed in the Pope family. 2. The similarity of the dates of the second Elisha's alleged birth on 28 Jul of 1729 with the recorded baptism of the first Elisha on 28 Jul 1723 suggests a possible record-keeping error, or mis-reading of the record, or other, similar confusion. Without more information, such as a marriage, or mention in a will, it seems unlikely that either of these proposed children were real.
