From the papers of Gen. Montford Wells, as cited by Stafford: "My mother was Elizabeth Calvit, marrying my father, Samuel Levi Wells, near Washington, Adams County, Mississippi. He came to Rapides parish, Louisiana, and opened a cotton plantation on the upper part of what is now the town of Alexandria, where I was born on February 7, 1800."
