Samuel Pettygrew and Peace M. Buchanan, daughter of James Buchanan of
Rockbridge
Rockbridge County Court
This cay came before me John Caruthers, a justice of the peace, for said
county. James Park, & made oath that Peace M. Buchanan who is about to
intermarry with Samuel Pettygrew is above the age of twenty one year, and that
his estate after the payments of all his just debts & securityships is worth
the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars - given unto my hand this 22 day of
October 1812. Signed John Caruthers
Know all men that we Samuel Pettygrew and James Parksare held and firmly bound
unto James Barbour, Governor of Virginia, and his successors, in the sum of
one hundred and fifty dollars; for the payment of which well and truly to be
made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators jointly and
severally firmly by these presents. Yet upon this condition, that if there
shall be no legal cause to prevent or obstruct a Marriage shortly intended to
be solomnized between the said Samuel Pettygrew and Peace M. Buchanan,
daughter of James Buchanan of Rockbridge County. Then the aforesaid
Obligation is to be void, otherwise to remain in full force. Witness our
hands and Seals this 22nd October 1812.
