  2. There are two Samuel and Mary Hammonds having children in Newton, Family:Samuel Hammond and Mary Fisk (1) and Family:Samuel Hammond and Mary Rogers (1). The various births of children are all simply to Samuel and Mary with no attempt by the town clerk to distinguish between two couples, the attribution of these children being done solely based on whether they fall before or after the 1770 marriage of the younger couple. There is a death record of a Samuel Hammond in Newton on 1770 that may be the father of the older couple, explaining why there appears to be no overlap in the two couples. But no age at death, nor any probate, is found to confirm that. It could be the death of one of the children or an unrelated person. No secondary coverage of the families seems available to help, outside of a mention in Crane, Vol. 1, p. 140 of the younger family, which seems to go along with results posted so far. So this caveat is added until a dedicated researcher comes along to provide good evidence distinguishing the families.
