  3. Most secondary sources call Samuel Foote's wife "Abigail Barker". However, Christine Rose (Descendants of Robert Rose, 48) calls her "Abigail Root". There appears to be no credible evidence for either surname. It is possible that the confusion stems from the entry in Goodwin's "Foote Family", p. 176 where he states, "Samuel Foote, of Branford, (Conn.,) was married to Abigail Barker, daughter of William Barker, of the same town, 1694. After his death, his widow was married to Jonathan Rose, of the same town. Mr. Samuel Foote died 1696, aged 28." William Barker was of the second generation, eldest son of Edward Foote. He did have a daughter, Abigail, but she was born in 1697, after the death of Samuel Foote. She married, in 1724, Jonathan, son of the Jonathan Rose to whom Goodwin refers and Abigail, widow of Samuel Foote, whom he married in 1697.
