Family:Robert Jones and Elizabeth Soane (2)

Note: The will of Robert Jones dated 20 Apr 1688, explicitly mentions two sons named Benjamin, one by each wife.

The will of Robert Jones dated 20 Apr 1688 mentions his daughter Jane Collyer, causing several sources (Source:History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts, Source:Litchfield, Wilford J. Litchfield Family in America, 1630-1900, Source:Taylor, June R. McIntire. Charles McIntire of Colonial Virginia) to show Jane Jones marrying Thomas Collier. However, Probate documents of the estate of her grandmother Jane Alexander show that it was the step-daughter Jane Curtis that married Thomas Collier. So it is probable that the will is referring to the step-daughter Jane (Curtis) Collier, and not a natural daughter.

Source:History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts shows a son named Ephraim, bp. Hingham 29 Jul 1649. This baptism may be found in the Hobart Journal (NEHGR, p. 121:22) but the baptism record does not mention the parents. Since Ephraim is not mentioned in the will of Robert Jones, this baptism may belong to Thomas and Ann Jones? This family arrived in Hingham in 1638 and apparently moved to Hull or Manchester by 1658 and Thomas is often said to be Robert's brother.

Source:History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts shows a son named John in the first marriage with a baptism in 1652. However as sources suggest the second marriage took place by 1646, it appears that John was actually a child of the second marriage.

   Robert Jones was probably the Robert Joanes who married at St. Mary's, Reading, England 13 Jun 1625 to Elizabeth Soane.
   [Note: there seems to be no documentation in New England giving either given name or maiden surname of his wife so this is speculative.]

   Since Mr. Jones cites no sources, the inclusion of this statement in his Jones genealogy adds no evidence confirming or contradicting the identification of "Elizabeth Soane" as the first wife of Robert¹ Jones of Hingham.
