Before marriage, Matthew lived at 158 Castlebank Street in Partick, Glasgow, just a few doors down from bride-to-be Margaret Hagerty who lived at 166 CastlebankS1. Partick is north of the River Clyde just west of central Glasgow. Marriage banns for MATTHEW and MARGARET (MARY) HAGERTY, daughter of JOHN HAGERTY and AGNES PATERSON, were published according to the ? of the ? Church of Scotland on 22 Jan 1864 at Partick, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandS1. He was 23, she was 19.

They had 10 children, 8 surviving (5 boys, 3 girls). Their first two sons, Robert and Samuel died young. They would name later sons Robert and Samuel to perpetuate the names in the family. Robert was Matthews fathers name.

Matthew and Margaret were still living at 166 Castlebank 4 years later when their son William was born and remained there throughout at least 1881 as they were there for the 1881 census.

MATTHEW died of stomach pains, after being ill for 4 1/2 months, on 20 Aug 1889 at 77 Merkland Street, Partick, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was just 47. He left Mary a widow with seven children aged 5 to 18.
