SAWYER, Joshua and Sally Simonds, April 9, 1812.
- Joshua m. Sally Simonds in 1812 and names his widow Sally in his will. Sally Saywer, d/o of Zebedee and Lucy Simonds, d. Templeton 1872, age 84. Yet Templeton VRs show children: Edwin to Sally 1812, Joshua to Sally 1814, Luke to Ruth 1816, George to Sally 1818, Hannah to Ruth 1821, William to Ruth 1822, Oliver to Ruth 1825, Lucy to Ruth 1828, Charles Edward to Ruth 1830, James to Ruth 1832. Nominally, this sequence suggests five wives: Sally, Ruth for Luke, another Sally for George, another Ruth, and Sally as widow. Something is wrong. There is only the one marriage and the one death found in records, so the records do not seem to support more than one wife. Joshua's will [Worcester Probate 52430] names his children Edwin Sawyer, Joshua Sawyer, Luke Sawyer, George Saywer, Hannah Craven the wife of Jesse Craven, William Sawyer, Oliver Sawyer, Lucy Sawyer, Charles E. Sawyer and James Sawyer, ruling out the possibility of two Joshua Sawyers. Several children attributed to Ruth have Sally Simonds identified as their mother in their death record (Hannah, Oliver, Lucy and James). The identification of Ruth as a wife appears to be an error in recording, and all children appear to belong to Sally.
