JAMES SHELTON SCALES - born 28 APR 1917 at Sandy Ridge, (Snow Creek Twp.) Stokes Co. NC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, with a B.S. Degree in Commerce in 1940. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1 NOV 1940 to about 1 DEC 1945. He was with the Fourth Marine Division (23 Marines) as a Company Commander, Battalion Executive Officer and Battalion Commanding Officer for the 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines. He saw duty in Four Operations: Kwajalein (Marshall Islands), Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He received the Legion of Merit Medal with other Routine Ribbons. His rank is Col. USMCR-RET. He worked with Burch-Hodges-Stone, Inc., an independent Insurance Agency for 36 years, retiring 1 MAY 1982. He married MARY STACY CROCKETT on 1 JAN 1942 in Bluefield, Tazewell Co. Va. He is an Elder in his church.
