SAFFORD, Joseph, and Mary Chase of Newbury, at Newbury, July 30, 1728.
↑ The wife's name is reported in many sources to be Mary Challis, e.g., Source:Paige, Lucius R. History of Hardwick, Massachusetts, p. 491, probably because they named a son Challis Safford. However, she is explicitly named Mary Chase in the marriage record. Mary Safford is named in the will of John Chase, dated 1730, per Source:Chase, John Carroll. Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase, p. 40, making her parents John Chase and his 2nd wife Lydia Challis. Her mother's maiden name thus accounts for the source of the son's name. Yet another example of assumption printed as fact.
