  1. The entry for Joseph in Source:Torrey, Clarence Almon. New England Marriages Prior to 1700 demonstrates (and perpetuates) the confusion about this family. Torrey names the wife as "Hannah ---/Sarah Grover/Mary Pearson". Only the first name is correct. The name of the mother of Joseph's oldest child in 1682 in the Beverly VRs is Hana, and the name of his widow in his probate file in 1699 is Hannah. Three sources are cited to support Torrey's mess:

Source:Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts, United States. Records of the First Church in Beverly, Massachusetts, 1667-1772, p. 19. On p. 19, there is nothing about Joseph Eaton (miscitation of pages is a common Torrey problem) and the dates seen there are around 1675. On p. 100 (p. 159 of the original book) is the baptism: "26 . 2. 1685. ... Joseph & Mercy chilldren of Joseph Eaton [by his wife Sarah Grover, both or Reading] baptized." The name of the wife was inserted by the compiler William P. Upham and is clearly wrong as Joseph Eaton and Sarah Grover m. 14 Jul 1703 per p. 2:102 of Beverly VRs, i.e., after this Joseph was already dead and two decades after the children were born. Page 24 of the church records does support that Joseph comes from Eaton in his admission record dated 4 Dec 1684: "Joseph Eaton a childe of ye convenant in ye Church at Reddin, but living in this towne desiered to putt himselfe under ye discipline of Christ in this Church & have baptisme for his children." No wife is named or mentioned (perhaps indicating Hannah had joined the church under her maiden name?)

Source:Molyneux, Nellie Zada Rice. History, Genealogical and Biographical, of the Eaton Families, p. 283, says that Joseph Eaton [#34], s/o Jonas and Grace Eaton, b. 1651, m. 1708 Mary Pearson of Lynfield. Jonas Eaton lived in what is now Wakefield (Cowdrey's Hill) which borders Lynnfield. But the marriage to Mary Pearson occurred in 1709 per the Lynn and Reading VRs. So clearly it was not the Joseph Eaton who died before 1699, and based on the fact that Joseph and Mary (Pearson) Eaton had multiple children from 1711-1725, it was probably not the Joseph Eaton b. 1651 either.

Source:Paul, Edward Joy. Ancestry of Katharine Choate Paul : Now Mrs. William J. Young Jr,p. 130, lists Joseph as a child of Jonas and Grace Eaton, saying only "Joseph, b. 1651, m. perhaps Mary Pearson", so apparently copied from the Eaton Genealogy, which was published 3 years earlier.

Note that it is likely that both the marriage to Sarah Grover, and to Mary Pearson, are actually the son Joseph. Sarah, w. Joseph, d. in Beverly in 1704, aged 19 per Beverly VRs.
