On 25 March 1684, John Jewett and Abraham Jewett deposed that 'being desired by Joseph Chapline of Rowly in the County of Essex to go with him to Twifitt Westt of Ipswich in the same county to treat with him, to see what portion he would give unto his daughter Elizabeth Westt, then we did hear the abovesid Twifitt Westt promise and engage upon marriage with the abovesaid Joseph Chapline to make his daughter Elizabeth equal with any of the rest of his children whatsoever in estate; we do further testify that in a short time after this agreement [was] made, the said Joseph Chapline did marry the abovementioned Elizabeth Westt daughter to Twifitt Westt, this agreement made in the year 1671 & they married in the same year' [ILR 5:61]."
