[edit] The Evolution of an ErrorMany trees say that Jonathan Rogers married a Judith Potter, of unknown origin. It appears that this fallacy arose from a misinterpretation of the book Burdick Genealogy[1], which states that Johnathan Rogers married about 1711, and then names his daughter Judith Potter. The word dau. at the end of the sentence can only apply to the person named immediately before it (unless the author meant to name someone after dau. and failed to do so). Burdick Genealogy, published in 1928, was almost certainly used as a source by Nellie Willard Johnson when she wrote The Descendants of Robert Burdick of Rhode Island, published in 1937. It states that Jonathan married Judith Potter, prior to beginning a list of their children. The wording in Burdick Genealogy makes the misinterpretation understandable. One has to be paying attention to realize that dau. refers to Judith Potter, Jonathan's daughter's married name. References
