Jonathan Brown & Loise Souther [by] Mr. Cotton Mather Oct. 31, 1706.
- This family has no obvious source covering it. There are several other records that may apply, but the prevalence of the name Brown make it unwise to jump to conclusions, especially in a big city like Boston.
There is a death of Jonathan Brown recorded 12 Nov 1718. Was it this Jonathan, another Jonathan, or this Jonathan burying his wife (see below)? Many of the baptisms at the Second Church do not list parents, e.g., John and Josiah, whose baptisms are assumed based on their birth record and known birth date. But it is unclear how to handle baptisms with no parent and no accompanying birth record. Some that -might- belong to this family are: Sarah, bp. 1 Jun 1712 Ebenezer, bp. 7 May 1716 Joseph, bp. 10 Aug 1718 Lois, of Jona., bp. 1 May 1720 Lois, bp. 30 Dec 1722 Elizab., of Jona., bp. 11 Sep 1726 Note that the only birth record found for any of these is for Lois on 25 Dec 1722. This lists parents as Jonathan and Mary (despite the record saying Mary, NEHGR, p. 97:43, article by George Walter Chamberlain, lists this Lois as a daughter of "Jonathan and Lois (Souther) Brown"). The name Lois with a wife named Mary, of course, suggesting the possibility that Jonathan remarried, presumably his first wife dying Nov 1718 after the birth of Joseph. However, neither death record, nor marriage record have been found, nor explanation for the 1718 death, etc.
