    VIALL, John (1619-1686) & Elizabeth [SMITH], m/2 Samuel NEWMAN 1687, 1688; by 1664, by 1663?; Boston/Swansea (Austin's Dict. 185 wrong); {Davol-Willets 162, 182; Viall 4; TAG 22:264, 25:159, 27:222}

    Source:Austin, John Osborne. Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, p. 185 says Elizabeth m. (1) --- Newman, m. (2) John Viall, i.e., marriages in wrong order, presumably misinterpretation of her father's will date 16 Mar 1691 which calls her Elizabeth Vial alias Newman.

    Source:Frost, Josephine C. Ancestors of Frank Herbert Davol and His Wife Phebe Downing Willits, p. 162, says "Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Richard Smith, married first a Newman and second before 1663, John Viall, who died Feb. 26, 1685/6.", citing Austin above. Page 182 says that "[John Viall] married second, before 1663, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Smith, Jr." It appears the date comes from Austin which shows a son James b. 1664, because there is no other reference to it.

    Source:Narragansett Historical Register : A Magazine Devoted to the Antiquities, Genealogy and Historical Matter Illustrating the History of the Narragansett, "John Viall, of Swanset, Mass., and Some of His Descendants", by David Jillson, Vol. 3, p. 100 (I assume Torrey's p. 4 is based on page numbering of a reprint): "John Viall's first wife Mary died between 1656 and 1664, as James, who was probably the first child by his second marriage with Elizabeth Smith, was baptized in Boston June 12, 1664."

    TAG, Vol. 22, p. 264, is an article abstracting "Stray Wills from Suffolk County" and shows the inventory of John Viall, but does not mention his wife. Vol. 25, p. 159, is an article on the wife of "Samuel2 Vial, son of John and Elizabeth (Smith) Vial, born at Boston, Mass., 25 Nov 1667", and that appears to be the only mention of Elizabeth or her marriage to John Viall. Vol. 27, p. 222, is "Additions and Corrections to Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island", and says "Elizabeth married first, as his second wife, John Viall, vinter, and gentleman, of Boston and Swansea, Mass.; and secondly, Deacon Samuel Newman of Rehoboth, Mass." It lists 5 children and notes a deed 1680 where John Viall and Elizabeth his wife sold land (Bristol Deed Vol. 4, p. 125), John's will dated 3 Jan 1681 (Suffolk Probate Vol. 11, p. 34), and a 1693 deed where Elizabeth Newman deeds land to eldest son Samuel Viall, to Benjamin and Jonathan Viall, and to Elizabeth Thomas (Bristol Deed Vol. 1, p. 316).
