Some sources report that John And Josephine were shot and killed in their home by unknown assailants -- probably pro-Union Free-Soilers from Kansas. Their home was then set on fire with their children inside but the children escaped. The date for this is given as c.1869, in Missouri. However, the family was living in Carroll Parish, Louisiana, in the 1870 census. Other sources say Josephine was murdered under similar circumstances c.1875 but that John survived. Yet other sources claim that John (who was a member of the James-Younger gang) died in the 1890s, possibly in the Frisco Mountains in California. There seems to be a dearth of dependable sources for any of these claims.
