The family name was Haughie (or variation of same) according to various court papers but he was also shown as aka Hoffie. Gradually seems to have permanently adopted the name Hoffie and he was married in 1843 under that name according to the parish records. All the children were registered under Hoffie although daughter Agnes is named as Agnes Haughie Hoffie on her marriage certificate and she gives her fathers name as Hoffie.
