The John and Nancy Bratton family seem to have been the prototypical Appalachian family, in spite of living on the outskirts of Appalachia, if not barely outside it. Residing in northeastern Kentucky, they had apparent Scottish roots (or at least affinities) since they named one of their sons William Wallace Bratton. Mother Nancy's ancestry seems to be almost exclusively Prussian, and the couple's marriage in Mason County, home of Germantown, Kentucky, hints at the larger German migration to the area. Son John Wesley Bratton points to a Methodist heritage, and the middle name of son Nelson Asbury Bratton brings to mind Methodist circuit preacher Francis Asbury who worked in Kentucky. References
