Genealogy Report for Johannes Shuey and Catherine Conrad:

Descendants of Johannas Shuey

Generation No. 1

1. JOHANNAS4 SHUEY (DANIEL3, DANIEL2, DAVID1 JOUY)1 was born Bet. 1731 - 1734 in Danstadt, Rheinland-Phalz, Germany or Pennsylvania2, and died Abt. 1815 in Pennsylvania3. He married CATHARINE CONRAD4 Abt. 1752 in Pennsylvania. She was born WFT Est. 1723-17594, and died Abt. 1805.

Notes for JOHANNAS SHUEY: 1790 Census, Dauphin County, PA lists: John Shuey, 4 males 16+, 2 males under 16, 2 females. (note: this listing is 8 households from Jacob Zent)

Also listed in 1790 Dauphin County Census:

Henry Shuey (also nearby Jacob and John), 2 males 16+, 3 males under 16, 6 females. Conrad Shuey, 1 male 16+, 2 females. Martin Shuey, 1 male 16+, 2 males under 16, 5 females Ludwig Shuey, 1 male 16+, 4 males under 16, 2 females Christian Shuey, 1 male 16+, 2 males under 16, 8 females (Note: Martin, Ludwig and Christian listed on page 8, with John Lentz (Zent?))

From "The History of the Shuey Family in America, from 1732 to 1876, by D.B. Shuey, reprinted by Higginson Book Company, page 227:

John Shuey's will, dated January 22, 1808, proven April 23, 1816, stands recorded in Book D, page 101, in the Register's Office at Harrisburg. At the time of making the will he lived with his son Daniel Shuel, in Hanover Township, Dauphin County, PA. Daniel was to have the homestead and pay out as follows: To daughter Catharine, 97 pounds, 16 shillings, to son Martin Shuey 107 pounds, 15 shillings; to daughter Margaret 102 pounds, 2 shillings,; to son Conrad 90 pounds, 15 shillings; to son Bennevel's children - to son 60 pounds, to daughter 40 pounds, when they arrive at age; to daughter Barbara 127 pounds; to son Frederich's children, equal shares of 167 pounds, 10 shillings; to son Michael 36 pounds; to son Jacob 142 pounds; to son Michael 36 pounds; to son Jacob 142 pounds, 19 shillings and 1 penny. Son Daniel Shuey and friend David Ferguson, Esq., were appointed Executors. According to his will had seven sons and three daughters. His wife's name was Catharine, but as she is not mentioned in the will, we suppose she was dead at the time.

World Family Tree, Cd#13, Tree #1387 has a Johannes Shuey , born 11/24/1730, dying shortly after birth, on 11/28/1730. In "The History of the Shuey Family in America", it has John Schuey, son of Daniel, living and leaving a will in 1808. Apparently, there may have been a Johannes Shuey born to Daniel and Maria Martha (Schilling) Shuey that died in childbirth, and the second John Shuey, went on to marry Catherine Conrad, born a year or so later, named in Daniel Shuey's will. Due to the exact dates listed with this source (National Huguenot Society), it is assumed that this information comes from credible records. It was fairly common to have another child born with the same name, after a child died shortly after childbirth. With the lack of marriage date or birthdate information on John's children, it is estimated that John Shuey was born between 1731 and 1734, and was most likely born in Pennsylvania, since his parents migrated to America in 1732.

Children of JOHANNAS SHUEY and CATHARINE CONRAD are:

  • i. MARTIN5 SHUEY, b. Abt. 1754, Bethel Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania; d. Abt. 1860, Washington County, Ohio.

Notes for JOHN ZENT: Family tradition and some accounts claim that John died at the age of 107. It would appear that this account is in error, based upon sources found to date.

John served in the Pennsylvania Militia 1790-1800 in Colonel Valentine Shoufflers Regiment No. 4 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. (Penn Archives 6th series, Vol. 5, p. 289)

1790 Census, Dauphin County, PA lists:

John Lentz (s/b Zent?) with: 1 male 16+, 2 females (note: this listing is on same page as Martin, Ludwig and Christian Shuey) This listing also would have agreed with John's family in 1790 before his son Jacob was born. At the time, John and Barbara had 1 daughter, Betsey, born in 1788.

John and his family moved to Knox County, Ohio, between 1800 and 1803 (possibly later in light of 1810 Census listing in Dauphin County, PA); he was a farmer. John was listed as Johannes Aent filed in Wheeling, West Virginia.

1810 Census, Hanover Township, Dauphin County, PA - 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45, 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45. (Listed as John Zantz).
