    p. 161.

'Miss Melissa Goehring [granddaughter of Jeremiah's daughter Letitia] says that in 1782 he married Mary Kuehn and Hon. John L. Black [great grandson of Jeremiah's daughter Elizabeth] says that he married Mary Small. Miss Goehring and Mr. Black are of the family and have its traditions and each ought to have a good basis for their claims, and I am inclined to think both are right.'

McCoy goes on to talk about a gap between the births of Elizabeth and Catherine, and proposes that Jeremiah first married Mary Small (John's ancestor) and then married Mary Kuehn (Melissa's ancestor). However, he also mentions (p. 163) that the 1790 census shows the presence of 2 sons and 2 daughters. This is one more son than is known (or suspected) by name, who likely filled the gap between Elizabeth and Catherine. However, there is also a gap of almost 5 years between Catherine and Frederic, so the argument is still sound, assuming that Miss Goehring was incorrect in stating the year Jeremiah married Mary Kuehn.
