researching the original hand-written records of the Marriage Bonds for Botetourt County (also on microfilm), one can find the marriage bonds for James Mills and Elizabeth Phipps in 1784 as well as for John Crow and Williana Phipps in 1787. Both bonds include the full and clearly written signature of each bride’s father, who was Joshua Phipps on the bond for Elizabeth and the bond for Williana.
