[edit] 1860 CensusIn 1860, James F (36) and Mary J Hill (35) live in Bath, Maine (Ward 7). James is a farmer, with real estate valued at $800 and a personal estate of $100 - comparable to other small farmers nearby. They have three children, Aravesta S, 6; Alfred A, 4; and Philena, 2. Aravesta is attending school. The whole family is designated as mulatto. All were born in Maine. The family lives next to John and Lavina Harrison, also designated as mulatto. Lavina is Mary J Hill's cousin; they share grandfather Peter Freeman. The Agricultural census for 1860 reveals that James F Hill has a 22 acre farm with 1 horse, 2 cows, and 1 pig (total livestock value $90). In the year ending June 30, 1860, the farm produce 12 bushels of Indian corn, 1 bushel of peas and beans, 20 bushels of Irish potatoes, 12 bushels of barley, 200 lbs of butter, and 6 tons of hay. Animals slaughtered at the farm were valued at $24. [edit] 1870 CensusIn 1870, James F (47) and Mary Jane Hill (45) continue to live in Bath, Maine (Ward 7). James is a farmer and fisherman. His neighbors, who in 1860 had farms with a similar value to his, have had the value of their land increase to $1,000; James Hill's farm is still valued at $800, and there is no personal estate value given. Family members are: Aravesta S, 17; Alfred A, 14; Mary P, 12; Llewellyn B, 8; Charlotte B, 6; Roscoe L and Roswell H, 3; and Lydia Hill, 91 (James' mother). The whole family is designated as black. All were born in Maine. All of the children except the twins are attending school. The family still live next to John and Lavina Harrison; Lavina is Mary Jane Hill's cousin. The farm doesn't appear on the 1870 Agricultural census schedule. [edit] 1880 CensusIn 1880, James F (56) and Mary Jane Hill (55) continue to live in Bath, Maine (Ward 7), on the "Cross Road to Bay Shore." James is a farmer. His sons Alfred A (24) and Llewellyn F (18) are laborers. Daughter Charlotte B, 16, is at school, as are the twins Roscoe L and Roswell H, 13. The family is designated as mulatto. The whole family (and their parents) were all born in Maine. In 1880, the John Harrison family is no longer in the Bath census. It would be helpful to explore the disposition of the Harrison estate as none of their children have apparently remained in North Bath at this time (John and Lavina Harrison's son, George W, runs a restaurant in Bath). The 1880 Agricultural census indicates James F Hill has 15 acres of tilled farmland, and another 15 acres of wetland and forest. The farm and its buildings are valued at $1,000, implements and machinery at $80, and livestock at $110. He spent $6 on building/repairing buildings in the census period. Farm production in 1879 was valued at $240. 13 acres are in grassland (mowed) and 13 tons of hay were harvested. The Hills own 2 horses, 2 milch cows (and 2 calves were born). The farm slaughtered two cattle, and produced 100 lbs of butter. The Hills have 18 barnyard poultry, which produced 100 eggs. There was 1 acre in barley production, which produced 10 bushels. Three bushels of beans were produced. A portion of one acre was in potatoes, producing 40 bushels of potatoes. Orchards produced 12 bushels of apples, valued at $6. References
