Margaret MCNIVEN was born 2apr1767. Margaret MCNIVEN of Muthill married 21jul1791 (A. Lindsay), 31jul1791 in Crieff (OPR) and 7aug1791 in Muthill (OPR) James CRERAR of Crieff. James was a shoemaker (A. LIndsay). James (1770-1835) was named CRERAR at his marriage and their children were called CRERAR at birth (until between 1805 and 1811 when the father’s name reverted to McIntosh and the family presumably moved to Glasgow) and, on marrying, MCINTOSH. 

James’ father and grandfather may have been named Peter and the change of name may have been due to their support of Bonny Prince Charlie (family letters).

According to “The surnames of Scotland” by J. F. Black, Crerar or Crarer is a surname derived from an occupation, Gaelic, criather, generally rendered Sievewright. It is the name of a small sept at one time fairly numerous in Strathspey and Lochtayside. They are ranked as Mackintoshes and some persons of the name in the U.S. now call themselves “Mackintosh”. Crerar was a common alias for Mackintosh especially when emigrants got in trouble with the church or authorities at home in Scotland. Also in Scotland there were people who "switched" their name (Crerar Compendium, America).
