Until the end of the 17th century the sandbars between Wethersfield and Hartford prevented Hartford from becoming a commercial port. James Caldwell, the first son of John Caldwell, was a sea captain. Going northward from the bridge to the square the corner lot had been sold by Mrs. Abigail Woodbridge in 1750 to Timothy Shepard. She reserved an old house which was succeeded by the home of Timothy and Josiah Shepard. In 1750 she sold the lot north of this to Ebenzer Balch from whom it passed in 1755 to James Caldwell. His house was partly devoted to trade. Later his brother, Charles, had a house here which he sold in 1765 to William Gardener.* James2 must have sailed from New London, Conn. In 1757 data from Colonial New Haven newspaper compiled by Daniel Annis lists the fol- lowing: “The lost Capt. Ventrus arrived at New Haven from the West Indies, with him came William Peck late mate of the schooner, Two Batchelors of New Haven, Eli Todd, Master. They had been taken by a French priva- teer. Mr. Peck reports the safe arrival in the W.I. [West Indies] of Capts. Mansfield, Frosby, Clinton and Welles from New Haven and Cort and Caldwell from New London.” Both James2 Caldwell and his wife, Abigail, were elderly when they died. James was 87 and Abigail who died two years earlier, was 79. His probate lists:†
