... Her first marriage was to James Washington Andrews of Montgomery County. With him she lived on a large cotton plantation in Richmond county, N.C. A few years later he became Postmaster at Laurinburg in the same county and moved his family there. Four children were born of this union - two died in infancy. After the death of her husband in 1889 she returned to her childhood home with her small son John and eight-year old daughter. With remarkable bravery she bore the burden of widowhood and the rearing of her children, for these were years of few opportunities for women who needed to earn a livelihood. Death claimed her son at six years of age. ...
