  2. The marriage records of Andover are hopelessly confusing. The key to figuring this out is the birth records.

Isaac Sr. 1724-1799 had a son Isaac 3rd b. 1757, and Isaac 4th was born 1760 to Isaac Jr. 1731-1811. So from 1760 until 1799, the references should have been consistent. They are not.

In the birth records, the town clerk referred to both the younger Isaacs as Isaac 3rd, one with wife Ruth, and one with wife Mary. To further complicate matters, church records appear to have done things correctly and some children of this couple (Isaac and Ruth) were baptized as children of Isaac 4th. The key to figuring all this out is Martha/Patty. Patty, bp. 1789 to Isaac 4th and d. 1796, Martha b. 1797 to Isaac and Ruth and bp. as Patty 3 days later to Isaac 4th. So Isaac 4th m. Ruth Davis.

Going back to the marriage records, the Isaac Jr. who m. 1756 Mary Wordwill is the s/o Christopher, b. 1731, d. 1811. Presumably his wife is the Mary that died 1803, almost 80 (so born about 1723).

The Isaac Jr. who m. 1778 Mary Morse had a son Isaac, so is not Isaac Jr. remarrying since that Isaac already had a son Isaac. Also since Isaac and Mary Morse their last child in 1796, it suggests it was a much younger man. He is s/o Isaac Sr., b. 1757, presumably the one that d. 1832 age 75.

The Isaac 3rd (jr. in church records) who married Ruth Davis was really Isaac 4th, the son of Isaac Jr., b. 1760.

This results of this analysis agrees with the organization of families found in Source:Abbott, Charlotte Helen. Abbott Genealogies/Early Records and Notes of the Lovejoy Family of Andover, p. 22/25 for Isaac Sr. and Deborah Sheldon, p. 25/28 for Isaac Jr. and Mary (Pevey) Wordwill, p. 28/33 for Isaac 3d and Mary Morse, p. 31/37 for Isaac 4th and Ruth Davis (page numbers given are as printed on page, and according to PDF viewer). (Note: one possible error in Abbott: a daughter Phebe is shown in family of Isaac 3rd and Mary b. 5 Dec 1790 and a daughter Phebe in the family of Isaac 4th and Ruth bp. 19 Dec 1790, only 2 weeks later. Probably only one Phebe existed - in the family of Isaac and Mary, as Isaac and Ruth had a daughter Mary in June 1791, as well as Patty in 1789, making a Phebe in 1790 unlikely in this family.)
