  2. Source:Waters, Henry F. Newhall Family of Lynn, Massachusetts, p. 108, gives the marriage date as 17 Dec 1779, but no record has been located. Concern is further increased by the likelihood that Waters misidentifies the name of the wife, about whom he gives no information.

That she married Hiram at this stage in his life could signify she was a widow, but she had 9 children with him, so probably was a younger woman, likely not a widow.

The first indication that her name is wrong is that the only actual record found for the marriage, the intentions, spells her name Hallay (Athol VRs, p. 151). The original does not appear to be online to check it out, but it is hard to imagine any way that Hayes would be written to look like Hallay. On the other hand, as suggested by information below, the alleged l's could be colonial long s's, hence Hassay?

Hiram and his second wife Sarah Hasey have a daughter named Jerusha. Since Hiram had yet to marry his third wife, this was presumably named after a relative of one of theirs. Notably Sarah Hasey has a younger sister Jerusha, b. Leicester 1757.

Finally, Hiram's wife Jerusha's death is recorded in Athol in 1807, age 50 (Athol VRs, p. 213). This is exactly what one would expect if his third wife was indeed Sarah's sister Jerusha. Sarah's father died 1758 and a guardian was appointed for youngest daughter Jerusha plus the other minor children, so this offers no clues.

No Jerusha Hayes matching this age at death has been located.
