1880 Census

Herman and Ernestine Erhardt live at 214 Meserole St in Brooklyn, NY. Herman is 40 and a tailor; he was unemployed for 3 months in the past year. He was born in Saxony, as were his parents. Ernestine Erhardt is 39 and was also born in Saxony, as were her parents. The family has three children at home; all work as tailors with their father: 1) Otto, 18; 2) Ida, 17; and 3) Flora, 14. All were also born in Saxony, so the family emigrated to the US after 1866.

1900 Census

Herman and Ernestine Erhartt rent an apartment at 760 Hart St. in Brooklyn, NY. There are two or three families at this address. Herman was born in July, 1839 (age 60), in Germany. He emigrated in 1873 and was naturalized. He is a tailor. Ernestine Erhartt was born in Aug 1840 (age 59), in Germany. She emigrated in 1874. Her naturalization status is unknown. The couple has had 13 children; only three are now living. Their son, Otto, born Aug 1861 (age 38) in Germany, is a widower. He emigrated in 1874 and has been naturalized. He is a tailor. Herman and Ernestine's grandson, Herman, born Jun 1887 (age 17) [presumably Otto's son?] in New York, also lives with them. Hermon's mother was born in New York. He is attending school.
