The King and Queen Send Cable To Mr. and Mrs. H. R. PerkinsS5

Congratulations Extended to Former Durham County Venerable Couple on Their 66th Wedding Anniversary (Teeswater News)

Despite strenuous duties as wartime rulers, Their Majesties, The King and Queen have not forgotten loyal British subjects, and proof of this was quite evident in a cablegram received by Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Perkins of Teeswater. Dated May 31st, 1942, from Buckingham Palace, Eng., the cable reads:

"Mr. and Mrs. Perkins--

The King and Queen send you hearty congratulations and good wishes on the 66th anniversary of your wedding day.
            --Private Secretary"

To say that Mr. and Mrs. Perkins were pleased would indeed be a mild statement. They were in the most plain terms, "tickled to death."

The elderly couple observed the 88th anniversary on Sunday, May 31st, and many were the messages of congratulations and felicitations extended by friends and neighbors.

Mr. Perkins, who is in his 88th year, was born in Plymouth, England, coming to Canada as a youth of seventeen. Mrs. Perkins, formerly Mary Moffat, is in her 87th year; she was born at Orono. In 1876 the young couple were married at Bowmanville, and shortly afterwards moved to Howick Township. There they farmed for a number of years, later moving to Belmore where Mr. Perkins operated a sawmill until coming to Teeswater in 1893. They have resided here since.

Mrs. Perkins is in excellent health and carries on her own household duties in as competent a manner as many women half her age. Mr. Perkins is not just in the best of health, but takes a keen interest in the activities of this community, and has not lost one whit of his keen sense of humor. An insight into the character of a real man is gleaned from this statement Mr. Perkins made the other day when the editor paid him a visit: "We've had a lot of neighbors in our day, but we never had a poor one."

To Mr. and Mrs. Perkins on their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary the community as a whole adds their voice to that of the King and Queen in extending congratulations and best wishes.

Additional information published the following week:S6
In publishing the report last week of the 66th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Perkins of Teeswater we were not aware that this venerable couple still had relatives in Durham County. But we learn Mrs. Henry Jacks, Manvers Road, and Mrs. Elias Trimm, Tyrone, are sisters of Mrs. Perkins.
