  2. An article in Source:Rhode Island Historical Magazine (35899), Vol. 5, p. 12, "Gov. Henry Bull and his Descendants", notes the discrepancy between the recorded marriage date "fourteenth day of 12th mo. 1664" and the death of Henry Bull's first wife "first day of the eighth month 1665", saying "one or the other of these dates is clearly wrong". An article written by John O. Austin in the Newport Historical Magazine, Vol. 4, p. 135, suggests the death is wrong, perhaps being 1663, but Austin identifies Henry Bull's wife as the daughter Esther Allen of Ralph Allen and Esther Swift, b. 1648. This identification causes the first article to assume the marriage date is wrong to give the young Esther time to mature a little more. There appears to be no concrete answer to the date discrepancy.

Another controversy revolves around whether Henry Bull married the widow of Ralph Allen or the daughter, both named Esther Allen at the time of the marriage. It appears that it was the widow, as identified by Robert Charles Anderson, because information, which he reviews in his comments, indicate that Ralph Allen Jr., the husband of Esther Swift, died around 1659 when Sandwich records appear to stop distinguishing between Ralph Allen Jr. and Sr. Thus, given the age of the daughter, it seems almost certain that it was the widow that married Henry Bull and d. 1676.
