The coat of arms shown on the "Wedding Stone" are indistinct, but look like this. They are clearly the impaled arms of a Durie husband (initials GD) and a wife Bruce (MB). These, plus the date, identify the couple as George Durie and Margaret Bruce.
Apart from being near-neighbours – Craigluscar and the Bruce seats of Blairhall and Clackmannan are just a few miles apart – the Durie and Bruce families have intermarried over the years. George Durie (bef. 1576-1633), grandson of Abbot George and 3rd of Craigluscar, married Margaret, Lady Dowager of Blairhall, daughter of Robert Bruce and Margaret Hamilton (opposite) and thus granddaughter of John Hamilton, Bishop of Dunkeld, Archbishop of St Andrews and his mistress Grisel Sempill, daughter of Robert, 3rd Lord Sempill. Elizabeth Bruce, daughter of Edward Bruce of Blairhall married Robert Durie of that Ilk (bef. 1557- Aft. 1618) abt. 1596. Robert was the grandson of Henry Kemp or Durie and Jonet, and disponed the lands of Durie to Alexander Gibson in 1614. Sir Robert Bruce of Clackmannan married Helen Durie and had a daughter, also Helen. His other two children – Robert and Janet – were by his first wife, Janet Wardlaw. Thus, George and Helen Durie (brother and sister) married 2nd cousins, both great-grandchildren of Sir David Bruce, 7th of Clackmannan and Janet Blackadder.
