Family narrative
These are one of my pairs of great-great-grandparents on my mother's side. Their story together begins upon their marriage in the fall of 1874. This was when the first President of Israel was born, when several dozen black voters were killed in the Alabama Election Massacre of 1874, and was the year barbed wire was invented. Inside the first year of their marriage, son John was born; after that Emily was born three years after; then Frank, one of my great-grandparents, another two years after; then a long eight years before Orville was born.
By 1880, John and Emily had been born, and the family lived in Loudon Township with Evan's sister, Nancy. Nancy's history has not been discovered yet. Twenty years later, in 1900, Nancy was gone. Both John and Emily remained, both now in their 20s, and Francis and Orville had joined the family. A decade on, in 1910, John and Orville, now into their 30s and 20s, respectively, remained single and with the family, while Emily had departed, having married into the Tish family.
There appears to have been a relocation of the family during this period, as by 1900 the clan had moved onto a mortgaged farm in Avena Township, but a decade later they were back in Loudon Township on a farm owned free without mortgage. There is a story here to be uncovered via property and tax records, I think.
Another decade passes, and in 1920 we are only a handful of years before Evan's death in 1923 and Mary's death only a year later. Both Evan and Mary ... not sure if this is the name she went by day to day ... were in their 70s, but they had a no doubt energetic seven year old living with them, grandson Harold, whose parentage remains to be uncovered. By the time of their deaths, Harold would still have been a pre-teen, and it is unclear where he ended up.
This is a not uncommon story of a nineteeth century farming family in the midwest, but the number of children the couple had over their many years is lower than many comparable couples, and one wonders what impact this might have had on their living conditions. There is not an indication that Evan retired from farming, and it might be that we worked up until his death, and that his wife's death followed quickly thereafter as has been observed in many long-married close couples. Elucidating the final years of the couple is another open activity which might never be resolved.
Vicinities
According to the 1900 Census, the family (family # 97) lived in the vicinity of, albeit an unknown distance from, the Family:Henry Logue and Mary Unknown (1) (family # 104). It's unknown whether Katherine Logue and Henry Logue were related to one another, Katherine being 20 years older than Henry.
