- ↑ No evidence has been found to identify this Erastus Sheldon. There is no such family in Warwick records, no deed for Erastus Sheldon in Franklin County, etc. The Erastus Sheldon of New Marlborough (the only Erastus Sheldon found in the 1830 or 1840 census living in Massachusetts) was married until his wife died 1834, ruling him out. The only serious looking candidate is this Erastus Sheldon of Ohio (listed in 1850 census), but secondary sources suggest he only had one wife Angeline Adams. The feasibility of this wild speculation is based on the 5 year gap between eldest son Milton, b. 1832 and the next child b. 1837. The second child's death record names Angeline as his mother, but no such confirmation is known for Milton. No marriage date is given for Angeline so we don't know if she was Milton's mother, or a second wife. Milton was born in Ohio, and the 5 year gap would be atypical unless, among other possibilities, a first wife died. If this couple moved right after marriage to Ohio, had Milton and Levina died, her husband remarrying, that might explain the lack of records for Erastus and Levina Barnes. But there is no evidence that any of this happened.
Source:Allred, Marilyn. Town of Warwick, Franklin County, Massachusetts, Genealogical Records 1739-1900, Births, Marriages,, p. 27, and 245, does not identify Erastus Sheldon, but appears to misidentify Levina Barnes as Person:Levina Barnes (1). However, far more credible sources suggest she went to Canada with her parents and married her cousin Stevens Baker. This leaves no known candidate for the bride.
