- ↑ Note: Source:Appleton, William S. Record of the Descendants of William Sumner of Dorchester, Mass., 1636, p. 32 (also given in NEHGR, p. 8:128o). says the marriage date is 4 Jul 1783. This is paired with a supporting birthdate for daughter Frances on 22 Dec 1783. No such birth is found in the Roxbury VRs, though a Fanny Sumner m. 1803 Elijah Lewis as further asserted by Appleton for this daughter.
Roxbury VRs, Vol. 1, pp. 333-334, show the births of several children of Edward in 1806: Emeline, Fanny E., Henry Payson, Jane, Maria, Martha, Moses Davis, Nancy, Rebecca, Samuel and Susanna. Moses' record is marked Nov 1806, while the rest are simply 1806, but all appearances are that this was a mass baptism of all the children in Nov 1806, but no indication of this is given in the VRs. Appleton has birth dates for all 11 even though only 3 are found in the published records. The basis is not given, one assumes some descendant was corresponding with him?
It is not encouraging, however, that Appleton has made such careless errors elsewhere, when he appears to be our only source of information.
