Ebenezer Richardson and Mary Richardson, both of Woburn, Oct. 7, 1747.
- Source:Vinton, John Adams. Richardson Memorial makes no attempt to identify Mary. Assuming certain typical behaviors, namely that a first marriage probably included an unmarried woman, from the same town, younger than Ebenezer and older than 18, there are three eligible Mary Richardsons born in Woburn.
1. Mary Richardson, b. 1725, d/o Jacob Richardson [p. 212, #1612] and Elizabeth Wyman, unmarried in 1771 2. Mary Richardson, b. 1727, d/o William Richardson [p. 537, #5203] and Mary Wilder, non compos mentis 3. Mary Richardson, b. 1729, d/o Pierson Richardson [p. 209, #1604] and Elizabeth Nichols, unmarried in 1758 Vinton does not give transcripts of the probates of the various fathers, but it is suspected he attributed a non-married status in the first and third case because the names of the daughter in probate records was still "Mary Richardson". Of course, this would be true if they married Ebenezer Richardson, or any other Richardson man, so the first and third case might be worth more investigation. This may not pan out, of course, since many assumptions were made in order to narrow the range to a reasonable number of candidates, Mary Richardson being a common name.
Addendum: Vinton appears to have erred badly in giving Ebenezer a second wife named Sarah. The death record in Woburn VRs says Mary, widow of ---, Sept. 7, 1815, 88 y [i.e., clearly not Sarah]. This birth about 1727 can now be applied to Ebenezer's only wife Mary. The daughter of Pierson Richardson [Vinton's #1813, p. 209] seems like a good candidate. It turns out from that page in Vinton, that calling her unmarried in 1758 is based on her brother Pierson's will naming his sister Mary Richardson [Middlesex Probate 19088], which would be her name if she married Ebenezer Richardson, and further Pierson and Mary shared a sister Judith, a name used by Ebenezer and Mary Richardson for one of their daughters. Further, the other two can be ruled out. The probate of Jacob Richardson [Middlesex Probate 18942] names his daughter as Mary Leathe, so hardly unmarried. And being non compos mentis would hardly fit a wife who becomes adminstrator of her husband's estate. Thus, it is very probable that Ebenezer's wife is the daughter of Pierson Richardson and Elizabeth Nichols.
