While they do have the same last name and were born on the same small island, it is unknown if they were related prior to marriage. The family story passed down was that they met on the ship during the passage from Scotland to Canada. The ship's list does exist, and does show that both their families were passengers on the same ship, the Cashmere, out of Glasgow. However, Rachel is listed as being 4 at the time and Donald is said to be 20.
