Named after his Uncle George Clifford Crompton. Was born in Barrie at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Began military service on 7 May 1942 and a week after he married (Nov. 11, 1942) Cliff went to Aldershot, England on the Queen Elizabeth; the passage took 7 days. Private Crompton then went to france and Brussels en route to Holland driving trucks in convoy from the south of France to Holland. Travelled to Vimy, France to see the World War I monuments. He was in the Pay Corps (Ordinance). He was demobilized in 1946 and returned on the Mauritania; the passage was to have been in only three days but the ship had to slow down since a passenger had appentisitis and needed an operation and so they crossed the Atlantic in five days.
