- ↑ Source:Jacobus, Donald Lines. Hale, House and Related Families, Mainly of the Connecticut River Valley, p. 111, lists 5 wives for Chiliab Hale: Mary Young, Lydia ---, Mercy Mayhew, Thankful Rich, Dolly (---) (Lucas) Randall. Lydia is given four children: Elizabeth b 1771, Asahel bp 1773, Daniel 1775, and Lydia b 1777. Jacobus gives no justification for this arrangement, and as he has no marriage date, no maiden name, nor any documentation showing why he thinks Chiliab had a wife named Lydia. The attribution of children given by Jacobus would require that Chiliab married Lydia in Connecticut, by 1771, since two of the children by her were born in Connecticut.
The older Source:Kellogg, Lucy Cutler. History of the Town of Bernardston, Franklin County, Massachusetts, p. 417, also shows a second wife Lydia but does not indicate which children belong to which wife.
Bernardston Town Records Vol. 2, p. 368 list the children of Chiliab and his first four wives, and only gives wife Lydia one child: the daughter named Lydia, suggesting the marriage was sometime after Daniel b. 1775, and before Lydia's birth in 1777.
