In June of 1861, Charles McLellan Norton is mustered into the Civil War as part of the 3rd Regiment, Maine Volunteers. He is 45 years old, and has five children, including a newborn son, John Roscoe (born Feb, 1861). When he returns from the war, he and Elizabeth have 4 more children, including a set of twins. Charles McLellen Norton dies in December, 1877, at age 61. His youngest child, Carrie, is about 4 1/2 when he dies. His wife Elizabeth, who was 14 years younger than Charles, presides over the household, which includes several of her adult children and grandchildren, until her death in 1910.
