"Edward Dudley18 (Robert17,16, John15, Richard14, Thomas13, Edmund12, John11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, Richard5, Robert4, William3, Rowland2, Hervey1), eldest son of Robert and Bridget (Green) Dudley, was born in Northampton, or Bristol, England, about 1602; he died in York Co., Virginia, before 6 February 1655. "He marrried Elizabeth Pritchard, of Northampton. Hester Pritchard mentions her nine children in her will.

"Edward Dudley came to Virginia in 1637 (Virginia Land Patents Book 1, p. 422, 19 May 1637).

"An account of Edward Dudley's life and genealogy, with references, is given in Part II. he is believed to be the founder of the Dudley families of Virginia, and most of the southern states."

Pages 53 & 54

"Edward1 Dudley was the son of Robert Dudley of Bristol, England; his mother was a sister, probably Bridget, of Edward and Robert Green of Bristol, who mention Robert Dudley in their wills. Robert Dudley was the son of Robert Dudley, collector of the Port of newcastle, and in 1603, Mayor of Newcastle, where he was visited that year by King James who knighted him. The elder Robert was buried in 1613.

"Edward was born in Northampton or Bristol, England, about 1602; he died in York County, Virginia, before 6 february 16541655.

"Edward Dudley married about 1620 or 1621, Elizabeth Pritchard, daughter of Hester and William Pritchard of Northampton.Hester Pritchard mentions her nine children in her will. After the death of Edward, his widow Elizabeth, about 1657 married John Robinson. Elizabeth died in York County, Virginia, 2 October 1691.

"Edward Dudley was the progenitor of the Dudley families of Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and other southern states. he was persuaded to come to Virginia before 19 May 1637 by Thomas Hampton, rector of Wilmington Parish, Jamestown, Virginia Land Patents, Book 1, p. 422, shows that Hampton paid ship's passage for himself, Edward Dudley, and four other adult persons, to the colony, and claimed them as 'headrights.' For bringing these six persons, including himself, into the colony, Reverend Hampton was granted fifty acres for each person, or a total of 300 acres of land in Norfolk County, by patent issued to him by Governor Harvey on 19 May 1637. This is confirmed by Green's 'List of Early Emigrants,' p. 200.'

"Edward first settled in York County, Virginia. On 30 September 1650, he witnessed a lease of land by Benjamin Powell to Morgan Haynes. This land, located in York County, was bounded upon the West by land of Edward Dudley himself (York County Deed Book Number 1, p. 145). He was now firmly established in the tidewater region of Chesapeake Bay. Apparently he became a planter of no mean resources. About 1652, Edward moved to Lancaster County. On 6 February 1651/2, Edward, with William Dowman and Ben Powell, was assigned 300 acres on Grymes Creek by Jno. Sharpe (Lancaster County, Virginia Court Order Book, p. 119).

"Edward Dudley brought his wife, Elizabeth, and at least six children to Virginia. Today, his descendants are scattered throughout the 50 states. They include distinguished men and women in all walks of life; merchants, planters, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and an eminent surgeon, and a great statesman and former governor of North Carolina.

"On 6 February 1655, Elizabeth Dudley, Edward's widow, petitioned the court of Lancaster County for survey and division of 300 acres of land formerly patented by Edward Dudley."

DUDLEY FAMILY NOTES (OF VIRGINIA, AND THE SOUTH)

Edward1 Dudley (1651) witnessed a deed in York county, Va. He was of Lancaster county (which then included Middlesex Co.), and is considered progenitor of most of the name in Virginia and the South. His tithes were rated in Lancaster, 1654,and in that year the Rev. Thomas Sax, of Lancaster county, in his will, left a legacy to “Robert 2, second son of Edward Dudley." His sons, William 2 and Richard 2, were seated in Middlesex and Gloucester counties, with their children, before 1660; and their descendants rapidly spread through King and Queen, New Kent, Warwick, Spotsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, and then later, the far South. In 1680,a Rev. Charles Dudley was minister in Farnham and Cittingbourne parishes, Rapp. county. Elizabeth Robinson (widow) a deed, in York county (1660), from Thomas Rootes, for two cows, for the benefit of her two children, Elizabeth and Robert Dudley ( York Records'). Richard Dudley, of Elizabeth City county (1646), was fined, with Capt. Christopher Colthorpe, Francis Ceeley, James Harris, Richard Wells, John Hartwell, William Sawyer and Hugh Dowdy, 200 pounds tobacco each, for not rendering their accounts, as guardians, to the York court. " This suggests," says Mr. Tyler (in William and Mary Quarterly, I.), 8' that they may have married widows."

"Edward Dudley18 (Robert17,16, John15, Richard14, Thomas13, Edmund12, John11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, Richard5, Robert4, William3, Rowland2, Hervey1), eldest son of Robert and Bridget (Green) Dudley, was born in Northampton, or Bristol, England, about 1602; he died in York County, Virginia, before 6 February 1655.

"Edward Dudley married about 1620 or 1621, Elizabeth Pritchard, daughter of Hester and William Pritchard of Northampton. Hester Pritchard mentions her nine children in her will.

422, shows that Hampton paid ship's passage for himself, Edward Dudley, and four other adult persons, to the colony, and claimed them as 'headrights.' For bringing these six persons, including himself, into the colony,Reverend Hampton was granted fifty acres for each person, or a total of 300 acres of land in Norfolk County, by patent issued to him by Governor Harvey on 19 May 1637.
