First Generation

Anders Olsson Bergstedt[1] was born on 30 Jan 1773 in Stockholm, Sweden.[2] The only information found regarding Ander's birth has come from clerical surveys after he was married. He stated that he was born in Stockholm.[3] He died on 4 May 1842 in Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden.[4] He was buried on 9 May 1842.[5] He married Kjerstena Bengtsdotter on 3 Sep 1814 in Kopinge, Kristianstad, Sweden.[6] Kjerstena Bengtsdotter[7] was born on 7 Mar 1780 in Andrarum, Kristianstad, Sweden.[8] She was also known as Kjerstina, Kerstina, and Kjersti.[9] She died on 9 Jan 1864 in Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden.[10]

Anders Olsson Bergstedt Family Biography

In order to understand Sweden in the 1800s, one must look back a couple centuries. In 1544, the Lutheran Church became the state religion of Sweden. Lutheranism became so ingrained into society and the people that “to be Swedish or Danish was to be Lutheran.”[11] Conversion to Lutheranism brought many good and bad consequences. The Bible was translated into Swedish and Danish. Priests became civil officials under the rule of the King. Catholic priests had been the instructors in the schools, but their salaries came from Rome. Students had to beg for money for the next school year. Religious education consisted of the catechism and a shabby lesson in theology. Moral confusion also occurred with the conversion to Lutheranism: morality dropped while crime and drunkenness increased.

Politically, the Swedish Empire dissolved in 1720. Sweden lost its Baltic territories and everything else except Sweden proper and Finland. But from 1720 to 1800, there was relative peace in Scandinavia. Sweden adopted a neutrality policy during that time.

The early 19th century was a difficult period because of the Napoleonic Wars. Sweden participated in this conflict from roughly 1806 to 1815. The Finnish War, a conflict between Sweden and Russia, took place in 1808 and 1809. The result was that Sweden lost Finland to Russia. In 1814, due to the Treaty of Kiel, Sweden gained Norway from Denmark.

In the same year as the Treaty of Kiel, Anders Olsson Bergstedt and Kjerstena Bengtsdotter first appear on a marriage record in Köpinge, Kristianstad, Sweden, on 3 Sep 1814.[12] Anders was 41 years old and Kjerstena was 34 years old. Their lives and history before this date are almost completely unknown at this time.[13] There are no comments on their marriage to suggest that either individual was married before.

Kjerstena had her first child about one and a half years later at the age of 35 years old. Her next child came over 3 years later and the last came over 5 years after that. The intervals between children might be due to her advanced age. She was 44 years old when she had her last child.

Anders Olsson Bergstedt was occupied as a rag gatherer.[14] This appears to be an occupation that would not earn enough money to support a family. A closer look needs to be taken to understand if this was an unusual occupation in the community. It appears that Anders did not make a great deal of money because the clerical surveys[15] of Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden, show Ellna (aka Elna) and Anders both moving around the area several times and living in the households of other families. Ellna moved back home for one year between 1843 and 1844. Anders became a tailor. At one point he applied to become the district tailor. This would be a very high distinction, but it is uncertain whether he got the position.

Anders Olsson Bergstedt died in 1842 leaving Kjerstena to live alone until her death in 1864. Ellna lived nearby with her family, but she had so many children that she could not care for her mother and her family. Kjerstena died as a pauper.[16]

2. Ola ANDERSSON was born on 1 Jun 1819 in Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden.[23] He was christened on 2 Jun 1819 in Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden.[24] He died on 14 May 1824 in Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden.[25]
3. Anders Andersson, born on 24 Dec 1824, Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden[26]; married Anna Larsdotter, on 13 Apr 1849, Huaröd, Kristianstad, Sweden[27]; died on 7 Mar 1911, Wilmington, Will, Illinois[28].

Research Report for the Anders Olsson Bergstedt Family

I started working with this family in Sweden in Fall 2005 when I was taking RelC 265. At the start of that class the only information I could find about this family was on Ancestral File and some was received from a distant cousin. This information from my cousin contained some compiled family group records (with some outdated source citations) created by a common relative of ours that is now deceased. All of this was wonderful information and a great resource to use to find the original records.

This information led me to Southern Sweden. I began my research by looking at maps of the area to familiarize myself with the region where my family lived. I thought that I found all of the correct locations and that they were all within 50 miles of each other. This semester I looked at more (better) maps and found that all of the locations are within an area no more than 15 miles across.

In my 40 hours of research that first semester, I found many original records mostly in the church books of the area. I tried to locate the probate records for Anders Olsson Bergstedt and Kjerstena Bengtsdotter, but records at the Family History Library did not exist that late. I tried to contact the local archives in Lund, but I did not get a response until this March. Unfortunately, I still have not been able to obtain any records from this archive. The archives received the check I sent them on 27 March to prepay for their services. I also tried to locate the birth record for Anders Olsson Bergstedt by searching through many of the microfilms at the FHL for Stockholm. My search was unsuccessful.

Overall, I found most of the vital records for Anders Olsson Bergstedt, Kjerstena, Bengtsdotter, and their children, but I did not find them all so there was still work to be done. That is the reason that I chose to work on this family again. I wanted to continue my search for something that no one else has been able to find yet that might connect us back a few generations or something like that. I would love to tell a happy story of excitement and joy, but as I continued my search I was not able to go back any earlier but I did find some interesting information.

What information did I find on each family member?

1. Anders Olsson Bergstedt

I actually did not find any new information for Anders. I had already located his marriage record and death record and several clerical surveys in between. I am still waiting to receive his probate record, if the archives in Lund will ever really work with me. I may have to hire local Swede to go to the archive to do the research for me or even go there myself. :)

At one point in my researching, I had a thought that maybe when Anders said he was born in Stockholm he didn’t really mean “the” Stockholm. So I did spend some time searching for other Stockholms in Sweden. There were 2 that I could find. One was in Kristianstad (parish = Valleberga) and the other was listed as Kristianstad or Malmohus (parish = Perstrop), depending on where you looked. The records for Perstrop were not available for the time period that I needed. I searched the records in Valleberga, but unfortunately I did not find anything. I also looked in the clerical survey in 1804 to see if there were any Anders listed that were born in 1773. I found 2: The first was the son of Jon Henricsson and Kerstina. He had a sister named Gertrud. There was also another girl working in the house named Kerstina. I do not think this is the right Anders. The second was a single man working for Pehr Lasson and Matta. It is possible that this is him. I need to do more research with this. This can be a dangerous method of searching in Scandinavia because there is such a small variety of given names and last names are just patronymics.[29]

I found out this semester that the Stockholm City Archives has an index to church and census records for the city. I emailed their facility to ask for research help. They kindly performed the search and finally replied to my request. Unfortunately, according to the search in their registers for the names A. Andersson or Bergstedt, there were no individuals born with those names around 1773 or living in Stockholm in the years after that.

2. Kjerstena Bengtsdotter

I didn’t find any new information for Kjerstena either. I still have not found a way to recreate her birth record that burned in a fire with most of the other records for that parish. Maybe someday I will find out who her parents are.

I tried to go through her sister, at least I believe Hanna Bengtsdotter is her sister, to find more information about the family. Hanna was listed as a witness to Anders Andersson’s (Kjerstena’s son) christening along with her husband Nils Olsson. I still do not have direct evidence that Kjerstena and Hanna are sisters but what I did find supports my assumption. For the purposes of this report though, I will not go into detail because we are focusing on Anders Olsson Bergstedt and his descendants. I will continue to work on finding direct evidence.

Though I did not find new information, I was able to locate Kjerstena’s death record. I originally thought that her death occurred too recently and that the records were not available. This semester I found that the parish records do not exist that late, but civil registration kept at the county level does exist. I found Kjerstena’s death record there fairly easily.

3. Ellna (Elna) Andersdotter

Her name is Ellna on her christening record, but every other record throughout her life, that I could find, gives her name as Elna so I will use this name. Much of my research last semester focused around Elna even though she is not my direct ancestor. Anders Andersson (who is my direct ancestor) moved to the United States and since I wanted to focus my research on Swedish records I decided to research Elna’s life more in depth.

Elna moved around quite a bit during her single years. She lived in many parts of Kopinge before she eventually moved to Huarod to work for a while. From Huarod she moved to Frenninge. This is where she was finally able to settle down. Within a year of moving there she was married and had a first child, Sven, a year and a half later. She may have had more children quickly but, unfortunately for Elna, her husband was sent to prison for 3 years for theft. So their family was put on hold for that time. Just two years after he was released, Elna and Nils had a daughter, Hanna. Elna was 45 years old by this time so it was not surprising to see that she didn’t have any more children.

Nils died in 1885. Elna was just 69 years old and she lived to be 86, so she lived as a single woman or widow for most of her life. I found Elna’s death record in the civil registration at the county level in 1903.

I looked to see if there might be a marriage settlement account for Elna and Nils but the records do not exist that late.

I am not sure what happened to Elna’s son Sven, but as I traced Elna through her life I found her living as a widow with her daughter Hanna and her family. Hanna was married and had 11 children at that time. I would love to trace some of Hanna’s children further to see if I have any living relatives still in Sweden.

4. Ola Andersson

I did not find any new information for Ola this semester. I still have his birth and death records from last semester.

5. Anders Andersson

I did not find any new information for Anders either this semester. I found a decent amount of information last semester. I followed his movements through a couple of parishes until he was finally married. At one point he applied to be the district tailor (I am still unsure if he was given the position) and he traveled to Denmark a few times. The story that I have been told in regards to Anders and his family is that on one of his long trips to Denmark (a few years long), his wife, Anna, was left with very little and a neighbor helped support her and her family. So when Anders finally returned, he found Anna pregnant with the neighbor’s child. With that knowledge, Anders left Anna for good. I am not sure of the details, but it is believed that he went back to Denmark and married another woman there. They moved their family to the United States and settled in Illinois. Anders never made further contact with his family in Sweden.

I tried to locate records of Anders in the United States but I have been unsuccessful so far. I will keep trying in the future.

6. Anna Larsdotter

I did not find any new information for Anna either. I still have the clerical survey showing her as a child with her mother and step-father. On this clerical survey it is stated that her step-father was sent to prison for his part in a murder. I tried to locate the court records for the area for more information on this, but the records did not go late enough to cover that time period.

Future Research

• There are many local historical societies associated with different areas of Sweden. Locate the society for the Kristianstad area. They may have some records that are not available anywhere else. Look at http://www.sgf.m.se/ more, but with someone that can speak Swedish or another Scandinavian language because they have not translated the site into English.

• Patiently wait for a reply from the Regional Archives in Lund. Hopefully they will find the probate records for Anders Olsson Bergstedt and Kjerstena Bengtsdotter and send the copies soon.

• Look up more information on the occupation of “rag gatherer.”

• Conduct a demographic survey of the hamlet of Gringelstad using the clerical survey of Köpinge, 1815-1816 (Film 142785). Some questions to answer: Is “rag gatherer” an unusual occupation in the community? Was it very unusual for Anders Olsson Bergstedt to be born in Stockholm or are there others in the community also from Stockholm?

The Anders Andersson Family

Second Generation

Anders Andersson was born on 24 Dec 1824 in Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden.[30] He was christened on 1 Jan 1825 in Långaröd, Malmöhus, Sweden.[31] He died on 7 Mar 1911 in Wilmington, Will, Illinois.[32] He was buried in Mar 1911 in Wilmington, Will, Illinois.[33] He was also known as Andrew Anderson. He married Anna Larsdotter on 13 Apr 1849 in Huaröd, Kristianstad, Sweden.[34] Anna Larsdotter was born on 5 Jul 1826 in Huaröd, Kristianstad, Sweden.[35] She was christened on 7 Jul 1826 in Huaröd, Kristianstad, Sweden.[36] She died on 24 Nov 1905 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[37] She was buried on 27 Nov 1905 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[38] She was also known as Anna Larson, Anna Holmstrom, and Anna Offeson.[39]

Anders Andersson Family Biography

Around 1866, “Sweden’s predominantly agricultural economy shifted gradually from village to private farm-based agriculture during the Industrial Revolution, but this change failed to bring economic and social improvements commensurate with the rate of population growth. About 1 million Swedes emigrated to the United States between 1850 and 1890.”[40] Anders Andersson also felt the economic hardships of this time period. He worked as a tailor and had to travel to Denmark for business leaving behind his wife and two children. Anna was left with no income and a family to support. She relied on the support of a neighbor and that support resulted in her bearing his child, Bengta Marie. When Anders discovered this, he left his family again and disappeared. In 1910 his only son, Ole, found him in Illinois with another family. That family would not accept Ole, nor recognize him as Anders's son.[41]

The original records confirm that after the birth of her second son, Anna's husband went to Denmark "with her permission." A few years later, the survey states that the husband's whereabouts were unknown at that time. By this time the whole family had converted to Mormonism and Anna had two illegitimate daughters along with the two children she had with Anders.[42]

Anna’s life had never been easy. Anna, herself, was an illegitimate child.[43] Before she turned 13, her stepfather was sent to prison for his part in a murder.[44] Her mother, Bengta Mansdotter, lived with her to help with the children, but soon Bengta became too weak to help and Anna was forced to support her also.

Anna and her family were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joining approximately 45,000 other Scandinavians in the 19th century. They also beckoned to the call to help establish Zion and traveled to Utah as soon as the situation permitted.

Hannah Andersdotter met a missionary in Denmark and traveled with him back to the United States and married him as his second wife. She arrived in Utah in 1876.[45] This was a time of “open polygamy” in Utah. Multiple marriages were still acknowledged and even encouraged. Though moving into the 1880s, there were fewer people entering into polygamous marriages for many reasons: higher financial expectations, greater economic opportunities for women, greater geographic mobility, and prosecutions increased from 1884 to 1893. It was probably for one of these reasons that Charles Gustaveson’s first wife divorced him. This made things easier for Hannah because she didn’t have to hide the evidence of her marriage once the Edmund’s Act of 1882 was passed.[46]

2. Ola Andersson, born on 26 Jul 1852, Huaröd, Kristianstad, Sweden[57]; married Rasmine Nielsen, on 6 Nov 1880, Ormslev, Aarhus, Denmark[58]; died on 13 May 1932, Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah[59].

Research Report for the Anders Andersson Family

According to my last report, I still had not found Anders Andersson on any census record in the United States; at least no Anders Anderssons that were a close match to Anders Olsson Bergstedt’s son. Family tradition is that Ole Anderson went to visit his father in Illinois in 1911. His father would not acknowledge Ole as his son, though “some of the prominent people in town told Ole that Anders had remarked more than once that he had had a first wife in Sweden and a son and daughter who had come to Utah.”[60] Someone listed Andrew Anderson as Ole’s father on Ole’s death certificate. With these two pieces of information, I was able to go back to the census records and search for Andrew Anderson living in Illinois with a wife named Maren or Mary. I located a couple that matches this description (living in Illinois from 1870-1910[61]) and the man states that he was born in Dec 1824 in Sweden, which also matches the other documents I have found. The 1900 and 1910 census records state that Andrew (Anders) Anderson immigrated to the U.S. in 1869. The Ole Anderson and Rasmine Nielsen Family History stated that Anders had immigrated in 1884. I believe that the earlier year is the correct information, but I need to research this further. I also found Ole Anderson and his family on census records from 1900-1930 living in Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah.

Future Research

• I need to find Anna Larson’s death certificate in the Utah State Archives and Records Center database. First, I need to know the death date and which name she went by at the time of her death: Larson, Offeson, or other.
• Find Anders Anderson’s immigration record in 1869.
• Find death certificate for Anders Anderson in Will County, Illinois. Order it from the Will County Clerk at Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago Street, Joliet, IL 60432, or through VitalChek online. Call (815) 740-4615 for more information. Certified death records cost $11 each. I need to find out if I can get an uncertified copy for less.
• Anna Larson’s endowment record for 8 Jul 1885 was not found in the Logan Temple records (Film #178052); need to look at other temples.
• Find Hanna’s birth/christening record on (or about) 27 May 1850 and Ola’s on 26 Jul 1852, on Film 141393 Items 1-4 [Huaröd Births 1689-1861].
• Find Anders Andersson’s death certificate. Search films 2342598 and 2342599 [Death certificates of Will County, Illinois, ca. 1910-1912].

The Ola Andersson Family

Third Generation

Ola Andersson was born on 26 Jul 1852 in Huaröd, Kristianstad, Sweden.[62] He was christened on 28 Jul 1852 in Huaröd, Kristianstad, Sweden.[63] He was rebaptized into the LDS church on 28 Sep 1884.[64] He died on 13 May 1932 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[65] He was buried on 15 May 1932 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[66] He was also known as Ole Anderson. He married Rasmine Nielsen on 6 Nov 1880 in Ormslev, Aarhus, Denmark.[67] Rasmine Nielsen was born on 16 Dec 1860 in Ormslev, Aarhus, Denmark.[68] She was christened on 18 Dec 1860 in Ormslev, Aarhus, Denmark.[69] She was rebaptized into the LDS church on 28 Sep 1884.[70] She died on 19 May 1946 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[71] She was buried on 22 May 1946 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[72] She was also known as Minnie. She appeared in the census in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah, in 1900 and 1910.[73]

Ola Andersson Family Biography

Ole was the last of his family to convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because he was living and working in Denmark at the time his mother and sisters were baptized. He was also the last one to travel to the United States with his wife and children, arriving in New York City, New York, on 23 Jun 1884.[74] This was one month before the Statue of Liberty was completed in France and two years before it was dedicated in New York. They did not see the Statue upon their arrival in New York, but I believe they felt its message just the same. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”[75]

Ola Andersson went by the name Ole Anderson as soon as he arrived in the United States.[76] Rasmine continued to use her name, but most people knew her as Minnie. They moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah, almost immediately after arriving in the United States and raised their family there. Both Ole and Minnie died and were buried there.

Ola and Rasmine lost their first child only 4 days after she was born. She was buried in Skouby, Denmark.[77] Ola and Rasmine went back to visit their first home and their daughter’s grave while they were on their mission in Denmark.[78] Ola and Rasmine would survive five more of their children, only nine of their fifteen children survived to adulthood.

Florence Manerva Anderson was born on 24 May 1899 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[127] She was blessed on 6 Aug 1899 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[128] She died on 18 Dec 1959 in Tooele, Tooele, Utah.[129] She was buried on 21 Dec 1959 in Tooele, Tooele, Utah.[130] She married David Charles Williams. 14. Duwayne Le Roy Anderson was born on 19 Jan 1902 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Utah.[140] He died on 7 Apr 1967 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California.[141] He was buried on 11 Apr 1967 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.[142]

Research Report for the Ola Andersson Family

Research has been going well on this family. The records searched are from a wide range of categories: LDS church records, cemetery records, immigration records, death certificates, census records, and obituaries. There is still much more to do, but the following information is what has been found since our last discussion.

A book recently printed titled Ole Anderson and Rasmine Nielsen Family History[146] includes a great deal of information relevant to our research. Regrettably there are no citations to lead us to the sources of most of this information, so we must take it at face value until we can back it up with original documents. There are also many wonderful photographs of Ole Anderson (a.k.a. Ola Andersson) and his family, including some taken in Denmark while Ole and Minnie were on their mission together.

At the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, I found the tombstones of Ole, Minnie, Hyrum, Olaf A., Charles O., Rebecca, Benjamin O. and David J. Anderson. I also found the tombstones of Anna A. Larson, Ola Offeson, Ellen A. and Hans S. Rasmussen. I took photos of all of these tombstones for future reference. The tombstone of Ole Anderson stated that he died in 1932. This date was different from the information in Ancestral File which indicates that Ole died in 1946. This information (death date of 1932) proved to be correct after further research.

The Utah State Archives and Records Center uploaded digital images of most of the state’s death certificates from 1905 to 1954 recently.[147] At first I could not find Ole Anderson’s death certificate using the death year of 1946. Once I went to the Pleasant Grove Cemetery and found an alternate year, it was very easy to find the death certificate of an Ole Anderson that died in 1932. Minnie Anderson’s (a.k.a. Rasmine Nielsen) death certificate was also located in the database.

Immigration records are vital to research with families that moved to the United States. These records mainly include ship manifests, declarations of intent and naturalization records, but there are others. So far, I located the ship manifest that lists Ole, Rasmine, Annie, and Gustaf Anderson arriving in New York City on 23 June 1884. I still have not found any record of Anders (or Andrew) Anderson and his second wife. I found one possible match, but that couple had three children traveling with them. Anders did not have any children with his second wife, so that couple is not likely to be a correct match.

The library at the University of Utah has a large collection of historical Utah newspapers. I found Ole and Minnie’s obituaries in the Pleasant Grove Review.[148] These obituaries stated mostly the same information that we already knew except that Ole’s obituaries gave a few occupations/community positions that he held during his lifetime: Justice of the Peace, Notary Public and automobile inspector. Minnie’s obituary states that she was involved in Red Cross work.

I have searched many LDS church records, membership and temple ordinances. To see a list of the information I have found so far, refer to extract pages #1 and 2 (Appendix D) attached with this report. There are still more records I would like to find.
