Winterborne Abbas (#29 on map) is a civil parish and a village in southwest Dorset, England, situated in a valley 5 miles (8.0 km) west of Dorchester. In the UK census of 2011 the parish had a population of 355.

Winterborne Abbas is a pleasant rural village located on the A35 major road. The parish church is dedicated to St Mary and is a Grade I listed building. The Coach and Horses Inn dates from 1814 or earlier and was a coaching inn on the turnpike road from Dorchester to Bridport. The Baptist Chapel dates from 1872 and has been converted to residential use. Other notable buildings include the Old Post Office in the middle of a terrace of cottages and the Grange.

Winterborne Abbas is one of a series of parishes in Dorset prefaced with the word "winterborne". A winterborne is a stream that usually only collects water during the winter and spring. In full summer and autumn it can be a dry river bed. NOTE: some sources (i.e. Wikipedia) spell "winterborne" as "winterbourne".

Governance

Winterborne Abbas was originally a parish in the Eggerton Hundred, one of the hundreds or early subdivisions of the county of Dorset. From 1894 until 1974 it was part of the Dorchester Rural District.

In 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, all urban and rural districts across England were abolished and counties were reorganized into metropolitan and non-metropolitan districts. Winterbourne Abbas joined the non-metropolitan West Dorset District.

Under another set of local government reforms adopted on 1 April 2019, West Dorset District was abolished, and the county of Dorset (excluding Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole) became a single unitary authority. The area is now administered by Dorset Council.
