Thornton Steward (#29 on map) is now a civil parish and a village in the Richmondshire District of North Yorkshire, England, near Wensleydale. The village is very similar to the others that dot Wensleydale, but Thornton Steward has a reservoir owned by Yorkshire Water. Its population, according to the 2011 UK census, was 199.

The village includes the ancient St Oswald's Church, which is reputedly the oldest church in Wensleydale with some parts being dated back to the year 680.

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Thornton Steward was located in Leyburn Rural District. Historically, it was an ancient or ecclesiastical parish in the Hang West Wapentake.
