Tanfield is a former mining village in County Durham, England, near Stanley. It had a population of 8,720 in the UK census of 2011. It had three collieries: Tanfield Lea Colliery which closed in 1962, and two collieries in Tabtobie, both of which opened before 1850 and closed 1948 and 1965.
Tanfield was originally a township in the ancient parish of Chester le Street, Durham. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. For the year 1894-1895 it was part of Chester le Street Rural District. In 1895 it was made an urban district. In 1937 it was abolished and absorbed into Stanley. Between 1974 and 2009 it became part of the larger Derwentside non-metropolitan district. Since 2009 County Durham has been a unitary authority.
