Geography

Located about 15 km from Verdun and 60 km from the region's capital Metz, Sommedieue is a very small hilly village, through which runs the Dieue river, which gave the village its name.

History

Located at the springs of the Dieue river, Sommedieue was already populated during the Gallo-Roman era, as shown by recently uncovered archeological remains. Until the 18th century, Sommedieue remained a small community of lumberjacks and charcoal makers. During the 19th century the village became industrialized as it acquired a grinding mill, a sawmill, woodturning mills, and chairs and furniture manufacturers. Toward the end of the 19th century, Sommedieue had ca. 300 workers. Most of these activities have now faded away.
