The Urban District of Skelton with Brotton was renamed the civil parish of Skelton and Brotton after 1974 when the North Riding of Yorkshire was abolished and its urban districts along with it. Skelton and Brotton became part of the short-lived county of Cleveland, England until 1996 and since then it has been located in North Yorkshire, England.
