"a township in Dalton-le-Dale parish, Durhamshire; on the Hartlepool and Sunderland railway, 8 miles ENE of Durham. Acres, 1,466. Real property, £3,615; of which £600 are in the railway. Pop. in 1851,1,387; in 1861,2,104. Houses, 379. Most of the property belongs to Shipperdson of Piddinghall. Coal is worked and coked.
