East Dorset is a local government district in Dorset, England. Its council was based in Furzehill, an outlying area of Wimborne Minster.

The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of Wimborne Minster Urban District with part of the Ringwood and Fordingbridge Rural District from Hampshire and the Wimborne and Cranborne Rural District from Dorset. The district was known as Wimborne from its formation in 1974, and adopted its present name of East Dorset in 1988.

The district was abolished on 1 April 2019 at the same time as the County Council was converted into a unitary authority covering all the previous district municipalities in the county with the exception of Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole which became a separate unitary authority.

The popularity of the area, being close to the New Forest, Bournemouth and the Dorset coast, has seen a rapid expansion in housing from the 1970s with the Verwood, Ferndown, West Moors and Corfe Mullen populations more than quadrupling. There still remained a rural feel, however, especially in the north and west of the area. Wimborne Minster retained its identity as a historic market town.
