Cowal is a general region covering the landlocked peninsula directly north of the Island of Bute. The A836 road travels through it.

"The principal settlements are Dunoon, Tighnabruaich and Ardbeg and many of its coastal villages are popular holiday resorts. Its rural hinterland is largely given over to sheep farming and forestry, the Argyll Forest Park occupying land in the vicinity of Loch Eck. The highest peak on the peninsula is Beinn an Lochain (901m or 2955 feet)." Source: Scottish Places
